Put-in-bay Outing

September 2nd, 2010

For our September outing, we’ll be traveling to lovely Lake Erie and visiting South Bass Island and Put-in-Bay.

We’ll be leaving on Friday, September 10 at 5:00 PM and traveling to East Harbor State Park where we will be camping in tents.

We will travel, as always, in Class “A” uniforms.

Our outing is scheduled to coincide with a Camporall sponsored by Troop 360 of Port Clinton. Many special activities and events are scheduled for Scouts during this weekend.

On Saturday morning, we’ll be traveling to South Bass Island to take part in several activities.

At the end of the day, we’ll be returning to the mainland to spend the night in the state park.

We will return to the Church, arriving at about 12:30 on Sunday.

The cost of the trip is $55 (camping, food, ferry, bike rental, admissions, gas reimbursement) and is payable a tthe Chruch when we leave. I’ll bring permission slips to sign also.

Scouts and adults will need the usual gear for tent camping and some spare money for the wide variety of food that is available on the island. The Scouts have tagged this as the “Pie and Ice Cream” campout.

Here is the list of Scouts that I believe to be attending:

August Outing – Whitewater Rafting

July 20th, 2010

For our August outing, we’ll be traveling to the Lower New River in West Virginia for an afternoon of whitewater rafting.

On Friday, August 20, we’ll be leaving BUMC (time to be determined) and driving about 4 hours to Babcock Start Park (http://www.babcocksp.com/ ) near Clifftop, WV where we will be camping in tents.

We will stop along the way to eat a brown bag dinner that Scouts and adults will bring with them.

After breakfast at the campsite, we’ll travel the 30 miles to Oak Hill, WV and Ace Adventures (http://www.aceraft.com/ ), our outfitter for the trip. We’ll eat a picnic lunch at the outfitter and then spend the afternoon on the river.

Afterwards, we’ll return to the campsite for the evening.

On Sunday morning, we’ll pack up and drive back to Bexley, arriving at about 1 or 2 PM. Scouts and adults should bring cash for a snack or lunch along the way.

Scouts must be at least 11 years old and at least 56” (4’ 8”) in height.

The outfitter will be providing all equipment for rafting, including helmets and personal flotation devices which will be worn at all times on the water.

See the outfitter’s website for some good tips on what to expect (What Should I Bring? What Should I Wear? What if the Weather is Bad? – http://www.aceraft.com/faq ).

The cost for adults and Scouts will be $115 per person. Payment is due at or before the August 9 Troop meeting. Checks should be payable to “Troop 166”.

In addition to our troop permission slip (http://troop166.org/files/2009%20Permission%20Slip.pdf ) each participant will need to complete a release form from the outfitter (http://www.aceraft.com/PDF/Ace-Wavier-2009.pdf )

At our last Troop Comittee Meeting, we re-aligned the outing schedule for the remaineder of the year. Here is the list of outings for the remainder of the year with the adult coordinator.

  • Summer Camp 6/27 – 7/3 – Mrs. Kirschner
  • No July outing – National Scout Jamboree
  • Whitewater Rafting Outing 8/20 – 8/22
  • Put-in-Bay / Pie and Ice Cream Outing 9/10 – 9/12
  • High Ropes /Zip Lining Outing 10/15 – 10/17
  • Catapult (Pumpkin) Outing 11/12 – 11/14 – Mr. Kirschner
  • Movie/Planning Outing 12/11 – 12/12 – Mrs. Kirschner

Items that are not bolded still need coordinators.

Coordinating an outing includes:

  • Finding and securing a location
  • Coordinating with the Senior Patrol Leader to confirm food, equipment, participation, money collection and permission forms for Scouts
  • Coordinating adult food
  • Coordinating transportation.

Remember that coordinating means “making sure it gets done” not “doing it”.

Please let me know if you might be able to help with an outing.

Initial Philmont Meeting for 2011 Trip

May 12th, 2010

Note Revised Time Below!

In preparation for Philmont 2011, we will be having our FIRST meeting on Sunday, May 23 at 5:30 pm at the Scout room! If you are not signed up but are interested AND eligible, please come to the meeting! (To be eligible, you must be 14 years old and a First Class Scout by July 20, 2011)

It is EXTREMELY important that everyone attend, as we will be discussing our plans and handing out the schedule for all of next year leading up to our trip to PHILMONT! I encourage the parents of Scouts to come to this meeting to find out what to expect and hear the plans for next year. Plus, we will be making an email list so we don’t bother everyone in the troop all year! (Note to Scouts: this means that if both your mother and your father want to get all the emails, have them both come and bring their email addresses).

I realize that this may be a little short notice, but is really important that we meet before everyone scatters for the summer. If you absolutely cannot attend (say you have had a trip to Antarctica planned for 6 months), let me know ASAP! Otherwise, please make every effort to come since there is important information you will want to hear.

The good news–we will not be collecting any money at this meeting.

Parents or Scouts–feel free to email me or call if questions.

See you all on SUNDAY MAY 23rd, 5:30 PM

May Outing

May 6th, 2010

On Friday, May 14 we’ll me meeting at the Church (time to be determined) for a weekend of backpacking on the Symmes Creek Trail in Wayne National Forest.

We’ll be returning on Sunday May 16. Because we’ll be hiking some on Sunday, our return may be a bit later than our usual noon arrival.

To quote Mr. Kirschner: “The hike is a loop about 10 miles in total, and the trail is rather flat with just 2-3 significant hills, so I think that all of our current scouts (including new scouts) will be able to handle it. Any adult that would like to come is also more than welcome. We will be camping near a road, so it might be possible for adults that don’t want to hike to meet us on Sat afternoon and camp, but we will be hiking some on Sun morning to get back to the cars.

“As we have said at the recent meetings, it is not necessary for anyone to buy hiking gear (unless you want to!)since our adult leaders can supply any missing items for the trip.”

Please let me or any of the adult leaders know if you have questions.
